Valves

DOES ASAHI OFFER AN ALL PP BUTTERFLY VALVE (PP BODY AND DISC)?
Yes we do.

Do you offer Kalrez O-rings for ball valves?
Yes, they are special order, priced by quantity and typically require a 2 week lead time.

Are your valve stem extensions for butterfly valves considered water tight?
2 piece style stem extensions are gasketed at the bottom to prevent water from entering the housing. However Lever style valves would be subject to water penetration if the level of the water was to be greater than the height of the extension as it would enter under the handle and “fill-up” the housing.

Does your company offer full scale AutoCad drawings of your valves and accessories?
Yes we have a CD that we can supply to specificying engineers in AutoCad format for full scale drawings.

Is there any way to shut-off the common (bottom) port of a 3-way Multiport ball valve and still have flow straight thru like a ball valve?
In sizes ˝” thru 2” we offer the cross-port ball option for the Multiport which will shut off the common and allow straight thru flow. It is available in all 4 materials.

Is the multiport ball valve available with EPDM O-Rings?
Yes. The standard is Viton® but EPDM O-rings are available upon request.

Do you make CPVC Butterfly Valves?
No. Our butterfly valves come in PVC, PP and PVDF only.

Do you make CPVC Strainers?
No. Our Strainers are only available in PVC material.

Do you make basket strainers?
No. Asahi strainers are only available in Y configurations.

Can I drill the "vent hole" myself?
We recommend the hole be a factory supplied option. What we do is actually disassemble the valve, indicate the ball dead center on 1 side, drill deburr, reassemble and then test the valve. This way we are certain that if the valve is installed following the manufacturers instructions, there will be no problems.

Can I use a ball valve for Sodium Hypochlorite service?
Provided the media is particle free, we recommend using a PVC body with Teflon® seats and Viton® O-rings. We also recommend the addition of a 1/8" vent hole drilled and deburred on the upstream side of the valve. What this will do is when the valve is in the closed position, the cavity of the ball will remain fluidized, eliminating dead space which could lead to crystallization and gas build up in the cavity of the ball.

Are the Duo-Bloc® & Type 21 ball valves interchangeable?
They are not interchangeable in sizes 1/2"-2". Dimensionally they are different as well as the "union nuts" are of a different thread and will not screw on one another. Sizes 2 1/2"-4" are dimensionally identical and also share the same union nuts, therefore they are interchangeable in those sizes only.

What is the difference between the Duo-Bloc® & Duo-Bloc 21?
There are many differences as the Type 21 is a new product. The Type 21 ball valve has a handle that acts as a spinner tool for maintenance, a molded ISO top flange for actuation mounting, a panel mount feature on the bottom for valve support, dual stem O-rings, and in PVC, CPVC and PVDF the valves have a maximum pressure rating of 230 PSI.

Do I need gaskets when I install the Type 56 butterfly valves in line?
No. The Type 56 butterfly valve has a full face seat which acts as a gasket on both sides of the valve, so no gaskets are required.

Actuation

ARE THE ELECTRIC ACTUATORS AVAILABLE IN DIFFERENT VOLTAGES?
Yes they are (12VDC, 24VDC, 12 VAC, 24 VAC, 220 VAC)

Are electric actuators available normally closed?
Electric actuators are power to open, power to close. They do not have a normal position.

What does "Duty Cycle" mean and why is it important?
Duty cycle is a rating that is given on all electric actuators. It is a relationship between actual running time and necessary rest. A unit which has a 100% (continuous) duty cycle would be able to run in ideal conditions indefinately at ambient temperature. However, a unit which has a 25% duty cycle would require 3 times the amount of rest time as actual running time. This is important when using an electric actuator for modulating service. When a unit is in modulating service, it is coninuously making corrections to the valve position as the process demands. In this case it would be important to have a unit with a 100% duty cycle. A unit that is in open/close service and would remain in either open or closed position for extended periods of time would not require the 100% duty cycle as the valve position is not continuously being corrected and a duty cycle of 25% would be adequate.

Can pneumatic actuators be cycled using something other than air?
We recommend using air, water, or hydraulic fluid, provided it is compatible with internal O-Rings, etc.

Are the Asahi electric actuators submersible in liquid?
No. The series 83, 92 and 94 are all weather tight units, however they do not meet the NEMA 6 requirement for being submersible.

High Purity Pipe and Tubing

What is Purad?
Purad is the brand name for the mose comprehensive, high quality PVDF piping system. Available in High Purity (HP) or General Grade, the Purad system is available in sizes 20mm (1/2") through 315mm (12").

What is Solef (TM)?
Solef is the mark of quality resin used in the Purad system. Produced by Solvay Polymers, Solef 1000-0001 Series HP resin is exclusively used throughout the Purad system. Unlike other systems which mix and match resin from different manufacturers, Purad employs Solef resin for all of its pipe, fittings, and valves.

When would I use Purad HP PVDF & when would I use PolyPure?
Purad HP is employed in applications demanding the highest purity levels for critical production. Leading semiconductor companies use Purad to protect the purity of their Deionized water systems. Purad has also been used in pharmaceutical and biotechnology applications. Systems such as WFI and bio-fermentation benefit from the advantages of Purad. PolyPure is used in high purity applications less stringent than those requiring Purad HP. Deionized water return lines and USP Purified water systems are just some examples where PolyPure is employed.

What advantages are offered by Purad?
Purad has the largest selection and size range of HP pipe, fittings and valves with the most stringent production methods. Exclusive use of Solvay resin provides unmatched system purity and integrity.

Single and Double Containment Pipe

What is leak detection?
Leak detection is a means of checking for a break in the carrier pipe. It can be done manually at a low point in the line using a probe or valve or by continuous cable located in the annular space of the dual contained piping system.

How do I know which material to use?
Material selection is based on the type of application (feed or waste) and the media being transported. A chemical check can be done by Asahi/America Engineering to recommend the correct material for your application. The media concentration, temperature and pressure must be known in order to determine the correct material to use.

What is annular space?
Annular space is the space between the carrier pipe and the containment pipe.

What is the standard length of pipe?
Polypropylene and PVDF pipe come in a standard length of 5 meters or 16.4 feet. The standard length of HPDE pipe is 40 feet. HDPE is also available in 20 foot lengths.

Does Asahi/America sell a leak detection system?
Asahi/America offers a completely engineered dual containment system including leak detection based on your requirements. Contact Asahi/America Engineering with your specific requirements.

What is the difference between Duo-Pro®, Fluid-Lok® & Poly-Flo® piping systems?
Duo-Pro® is the Asahi line of double contained piping system available in almost any combination of Pro150, Pro45 and PVDF. Fluid-Lok® is the Asahi line of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) dual contained piping system aquired from Fluid Controls. Poly-Flo® is a patented extruded double wall pipe system that is of unitary construction. Poly-Flo® is only available in sizes 1x2, 2x3 and 4x6 in materials of Black Polypropylene (BPP) or Polyethylene (PE).

How is thermoplastic piping joined together?
Butt fusion is a method of welding the pipe together by heat fusion. Installation is quick, reliable and repeatable. It is also very cost effective. Welded pipe can be put into service within hours of welding as opposed to cementing or gluing (i.e. PVC) which can take at least 24 hours before it can be put into service.

Do you carry PVC or CPVC fittings?
No. Our pipe and fittings are available in PP, PVDF and HDPE.

Why does my pipe buried in the ground need to be double contained?
The EPA requires it per 40CFR Section 280 & 281 to protect the environment from accidental exposure. Asahi/America's dual contained piping meets EPA requirements and we have over 10 years experience installing this type of system. Note that some form of leak detection is also required. Visit www.epa.gov
for more information.
